Scientific assessments indicate that a complete switch from cigarettes to IQOS may reduce exposure to certain harmful chemicals compared with smoking.
IQOS heats tobacco instead of burning it, which eliminates combustion. Unlike cigarettes that produce thousands of chemicals at temperatures reaching around 800\u00b0C, heated tobacco products do not exceed 350\u00b0C, producing an aerosol instead of smoke.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This reauthorization is based on cumulative scientific assessments that have included different generations of devices. The evaluation used pre-market data, clinical and behavioral studies, and ongoing reviews of related products.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Ali Karaman, Managing Director of Philip Morris Egypt and Levant, said the renewal reflects an important step supporting PMI\u2019s ambition to phase out cigarettes as soon as possible. He added that it highlights the role innovation and scientific substantiation can play in providing better alternatives to cigarettes for adult smokers.
He noted that since 2008, PMI has invested more than $16 billion to develop, scientifically substantiate, and commercialize innovative smoke-free products for adults who would otherwise continue to smoke.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Its current portfolio consists primarily of cigarettes and smoke-free products, including heat-not-burn, nicotine pouch, and e-vapor products. PMI\u2019s smoke-free products are available in over 105 markets. As of December 31, 2025, PMI estimates they were used by over 43 million legal-age consumers worldwide, many of whom have moved away from cigarettes or significantly reduced consumption.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The smoke-free business accounted for 41.5% of PMI\u2019s full year 2025 total net revenues. Since 2008, PMI has invested over $16 billion to develop, substantiate, and commercialize innovative smoke-free products, with the goal of ending cigarette sales. The investment includes building world-class scientific assessment capabilities in pre-clinical systems toxicology, clinical and behavioral research, and post-market studies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Following a robust science-based review, the FDA authorized the marketing of Swedish Match\u2019s General snus and ZYN nicotine pouches, and versions of PMI\u2019s IQOS devices and consumables. These are the first-ever authorizations in their respective categories. Versions of IQOS devices, consumables, and General snus also obtained the first-ever Modified Risk Tobacco Product authorizations from the FDA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
