In a major step toward modernizing Egypt\u2019s digital payments infrastructure, the Central Bank of Egypt announced that the Egyptian banking sector will transition on June 21, 2026 to the international ISO 20022 standard for SWIFT messages in interbank financial transfers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On this occasion, Mr. Hassan Abdalla<\/strong>, Governor of the Central Bank of Egypt, stated that the move continues the CBE\u2019s efforts to upgrade the payments infrastructure by improving the efficiency of real-time settlements between banks. He added that it will pave the way for supporting modern financial services such as open banking and advanced data analytics, while enabling banks and institutions to develop innovative banking and financial products in line with global best practices and standards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Faster Processing, Richer<\/strong> Data<\/p>\n\n\n\n

ISO 20022 is the most advanced unified global standard for financial messaging. It enhances the efficiency of real-time interbank settlements through faster and more accurate processing. It also improves the quality of transfer data by allowing additional information to be included, which enhances cross-border payments by providing standardized data that facilitates automated processing and reduces manual intervention. This directly reflects on transaction speed and operational efficiency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The standard also strengthens banks\u2019 ability to automatically screen transactions in accordance with international and local recommendations on anti-money laundering and counter-terrorism financing. This makes the update a strategic necessity to facilitate cross-border payments and ensure seamless integration with regional payment platforms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With this step, Egypt\u2019s updated real-time gross settlement system becomes aligned with this standard, placing it among the world\u2019s most advanced settlement systems and reinforcing its role as a core pillar of Egypt\u2019s digital financial services infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
