Inauguration of Upgraded Medical Units at NCI
In line with the Central Bank of Egypt’s developmental role to support the state’s efforts toward sustainable development and improving citizens’ quality of life, H.E. Mr. Hassan Abdalla, Governor of the CBE, and H.E. Dr. Abdelaziz Qonsoah, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, inaugurated on Sunday several medical projects and units at the National Cancer Institute, affiliated with Cairo University. These projects were renovated and equipped with support from the CBE and banks operating in Egypt under the banking sector’s Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives, with healthcare as a top priority.
High-Level Attendance at the Ceremony
The event was attended by Dr. Mohamed Sami Abdel Sadek, President of Cairo University; Dr. Hossam Kamel, Former President of Cairo University; Dr. Mohamed Abdel-Moati Samra, Dean of the National Cancer Institute; Ms. Ghada Tawfik, Sub-Governor for Corporate Social Responsibility at the CBE; and Dr. Adel Abdel Ghaffar, Official Spokesperson of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, alongside senior officials from the CBE and the Ministry.
“Hossam Kamel” Bone Marrow Transplant Unit to Eliminate Waiting Lists
The Governor and the Minister inaugurated the “Hossam Kamel” Bone Marrow Transplant Unit—founded by the pioneer of bone marrow transplantation, Dr. Hossam Kamel—along with the Hematology Unit in the Institute’s southern building, following renovation and equipping supported by the CBE. The upgrade expands capacity to serve nearly 400 patients annually, helping eliminate waiting lists for bone marrow transplant patients nationwide.
Outpatient Clinics Complex to Serve 1,500 Patients Daily
The Outpatient Clinics and Medical Services Complex was also reopened after renovation and equipping. It comprises an integrated range of specialized clinics including Surgical Oncology, Hematologic Oncology, Adult and Pediatric Solid Tumors, Radiotherapy, Pain Management, Dentistry, ECG and Echocardiography, Clinical Nutrition, Early Diagnosis, Anesthesia, and Psychological Support. Collectively, these clinics serve approximately 1,500 patients daily.
Inspection of Ongoing Works at Northern Hospital and Middle Building
The CBE Governor and the Minister inspected ongoing renovation and construction works at the Institute’s northern hospital and middle building. They also toured upgraded medical departments and units equipped with the latest devices and technologies, including the Inpatient Department, the Pediatric Day Care Unit, and the Women’s Health Unit, enhancing capacity and improving diagnostic and treatment efficiency for oncology patients.
Continuation of Banking Sector’s Support for NC
These inaugurations reflect continued efforts to upgrade NCI, which previously included rehabilitation and equipping of the southern building with advanced medical systems supported by the CBE. This ongoing collaboration highlights the strong partnership between the banking sector and national institutions in supporting specialized healthcare services.
Hassan Abdalla: Investing in People is the Foundation of Development
H.E. Mr. Hassan Abdalla expressed his pleasure at visiting NCI, recognized as the first and largest integrated academic cancer treatment center in the Middle East and Arab region. He emphasized that the CBE and banking sector’s contribution represents a model of national integration to elevate service quality for citizens. He noted that supporting healthcare is a top priority in the CBE’s CSR strategy, driven by the belief that investing in human capital is the fundamental pillar of sustainable development.
Minister of Higher Education Commends Banking Sector’s Support for University
Hospitals
Dr. Abdelaziz Qonsoah extended gratitude to Mr. Hassan Abdalla, commending the banking sector’s vital support to university hospitals serving nearly 32 million patients annually. He praised the development of the Outpatient Clinics Complex, renovation of Bone Marrow Transplant and Hematology Units in the northern building, and upgrading of the southern building. Ongoing works are underway to upgrade the northern hospital and middle building, plus expansion and development of the Breast Cancer Hospital in the First Settlement with an advanced radiotherapy device.
NCI’s Pivotal Role in Cancer Care and Early Detection
Dr. Qonsoah also praised NCI’s continuous performance improvements, describing it as the oldest and most prestigious specialized academic oncology center in the Arab region. He highlighted NCI’s pivotal role in providing comprehensive diagnostic and treatment services, participation in Presidential Health Initiatives, implementation of early detection programs for various cancers, and specialized care through its Outpatient Clinics.
